Railway Track construction in India started in India in mid of 19th century. Initially the building of network was contracted to Companies and later on British Government itself started developing the network as State Railways. Initially, military engineers, primarily from East India Company and later British Indian Army were involved in execution/construction. The expansion of Railway network was high on priority of British. With this high growth of Railway network and increasing traffic, the British Government recognized the need for a separate department for handling engineering department for railways. The seeds for this service were laid as back as 1890-1910. As per the old records initially officers were taken from Public Works Department (PWD) to meet the requirement of Engineering Department of Railways. Later on the recruitment for railways was started.
The current Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE) Recruitment Rules were notified on 28th April, 1962.
